483 4xx Client error RFC 3261

SIP 483 Too Many Hops

Max-Forwards reached zero before the request reached its destination. This usually means a routing loop.

Typical Q.850 / ISDN cause: 25 (Exchange routing error)

Common causes

  • Routing loop between proxies or PBXs.
  • An unusually long legitimate proxy chain with a low starting Max-Forwards.

How to fix it

  1. Look for loops as with 482. Check the starting Max-Forwards value (normally 70).
Seeing 483 on calls through a router or firewall? Check that SIP ALG is disabled. It causes a surprising number of SIP errors. Read why.
